Our kayak rolling weekend provides paddlers with the opportunity to learn to roll a kayak in small groups. Our classes start with a theory lesson in our on-site classroom before heading down to the water for a rolling demonstration and an explanation of multiple ways to roll a kayak. Kayaks, paddles, and teaching aids are included in this weekend course. Feel free to bring your own kayak as well.
We have been successfully teaching kayakers how to roll for over 20 years now and we have our method dialed in. We were honoured to have been chosen by Paddle Canada in 2014 to help write the rolling program for Paddle Canada and are senior instructor trainers in this discipline and sea kayaking in general.
During the weekend we have a tailored set of exercises on land and on the water for you to work through at your own pace. Our success rate at getting people to roll is very high. We have multiple kayaks, and teaching aids and also use video analysis. The improvement we see in paddlers’ skills has been incredibly satisfying and exciting for both the students and for us as their instructors. If you run out of steam at any point there are other skills we can work on that you don’t need to be upsidedown to learn. Learning to roll isn’t as important as having excellent rescue skills but it sure improves your confidence on the water as well as your edging performance. If you don’t learn to roll during the weekend you will be heading home with the methodology that we use to continue to practice on your own time.
Stay With Us
This course will be held at Ontario Sea Kayak Centre in Parry Sound. On-site we have glamping tents and tent platforms. Accommodation is available to add to your booking at check out for your convenience. The atmosphere at our paddling centre is one of inclusivity, fun, and sharing. Staying on-site allows you to connect with the other students on the course and share knowledge around the waterfront fire in the evenings. Accommodation will say Saturday and Sunday on the booking but we include Friday accommodation for free. Three nights for the price of two.

James Roberts
James started kayaking at 18. Since then his paddling career has taken him all over the world as an expedition leader and senior kayak instructor.
Dympna Hayes
Dympna is co-owner and operator, of Ontario Sea Kayak Centre along with her partner and husband James. She loves sharing her craft with others through her coaching on skills courses and through her guiding while on kayaking trips.
Mike Fairburn
Mike’s passion for sea kayaking began about 15 years ago. In the years that have followed Mike has become a Greenland rolling and skills enthusiast. While Mike has always loved the great outdoors, Sea Kayaking has intensified this love and brought him closer to nature through back country camping.
It was a great time. The Instructors were tremendous people with vast knowledge and precision execution of skills. We had 2 people In our group whose skill set was well below everyone else. Both instructors showed nurturing patience that not only provide the weak paddlers' comfort but the rest of us with the license to push ourselves at the same time.
