Wild Islands, Sea Otters and West Coast Sunsets.
Imagine a maze of tiny forested islands, white-sand beaches, and glassy channels scattered with rafts of sea otters. Eagles circle overhead, whales spout on the horizon, and each evening ends with a fiery Pacific sunset over the open ocean. This is Nuchatlitz, on the remote west coast of Vancouver Island – one of Canada’s finest sea kayaking destinations.
For seven days, we travel by sea kayak, carrying everything we need in our boats: cozy camp gear, fresh ingredients, and all the comforts of a well-run wilderness kitchen. No lodges, no roads – just you, your paddle, and the rhythm of the ocean.
Why Nuchatlitz?
The Nuchatlitz area lies off the northwest tip of Nootka Island, accessible only by boat or floatplane, and famous for its sheltered channels, pocket beaches and outer reefs that feel like the true Pacific edge.
On this expedition you can expect:
- Sea otters everywhere – this area is home to one of the largest sea otter populations on the coast, often seen floating in kelp rafts just off our camps.
- Whales, seals & sea lions – humpback and grey whales frequently cruise these waters, with harbour seals and sea lions popping up nearby as we paddle.
- Rich bird life – marbled murrelets, loons, cormorants, oystercatchers and bald eagles are regular companions overhead and along the shore.
- Sandy beaches & tide pools – camp on west-facing beaches, wander through tide pools full of anemones, crabs and colourful starfish, and explore sculpted sandstone shorelines.
- Sea stacks & sea caves – on the outer coast, conditions permitting, we weave among sea stacks and peer into sea caves carved by winter storms.
- Expert guides and instructors – Join James and Lee, for this trip filled with laughs, exploration and making life memories.
We acknowledge that we paddle in the traditional territory of Nuu-chah-nulth Nations, whose deep history and connection to these waters shape this coastline today.
Life on Expedition: Camp & Cuisine
This is a self-contained sea kayaking journey: everything we need travels with us in our kayaks.
- Comfortable coastal camps – sandy beaches and driftwood benches under the stars.
- All gear packed in the boats – group equipment, kitchen, and your personal kit are stored snugly in watertight hatches.
- Seriously good food – think fresh ingredients, hearty breakfasts, creative meals and snacks, and satisfying hot dinners, no “just-add-water” here. We’re proud of our expedition kitchen and you’ll taste the difference.
- Evenings unplugged – tide-pool rambles, photography, journal writing, stargazing, or simply listening to the surf and the occasional splash of an otter.
- Boat Shuttle included – We will access this remote and stunning area by boat shuttle.

Amazing trip. One of the most beautiful parts of the country, and how better to see and explore it than in a kayak? Great company. Fabulous food, and abundant fish. One of the true remaining wilderness experiences in Canada, far away from civilization. Rugged, unspoilt landscape where we could trace billions of years of history in the rocky cliffs and also spot a few bears.
