Where to Start

Kayak courses and certification explained.

What is Paddle Canada?

All of our instructors are Paddle Canada certified. So what is Paddle Canada? Paddle Canada is a national certification sea kayak program. The program includes nationally recognized certifications in five skill levels, five Instructor levels, and four instructor-trainer Levels.

Paddle Canada certification skill levels begin with the Basic Kayaking Course and progress to knowledge and skill development necessary for safe sea kayak touring along Canada’s magnificent open sea coasts and freshwater shorelines.

Where do you fit in? Choosing the right kayak lesson

Paddle Canada Level One Skills

This is where we recommend new paddlers or paddlers with a little experience should begin. During this weekend course you will learn the strokes to move the kayak in all directions, we will teach you how to rescue yourself or a partner if you and they capsize and also theory like navigation and weather planning. We also can save you the cost of the course in helping you not make bad decisions on buying gear. Take this course first, learn and then go and buy the equipment.

Paddle Canada Level Two Skills

Have you been kayaking for a while? Maybe you have taken your Paddle Canada Level One certification or have equivalent skills. Now you’re ready to gain confidence with conditions more challenging than flat water. On this course you will develop your navigation and weather planning skills, learn towing and improve your own personal paddling skills. This is a four day course based at our centre in the Parry Sound area with day-trips out onto Georgian Bay.

Paddle Canada Level Two Skills with Wilderness Camping

In this program, you will learn all of the level 2 skills listed above but learn them over six days out on trip in the beautiful Georgian Bay Islands. What an epic classroom! During this program you will also learn all of the Wilderness camping skills. Whether you are new to camping or have been camping for years, there is always something to learn. We will help you with campsite set up, hanging tarps, campsite sanitation and how to camp comfortably.

Paddle Canada Level Three Skills

By this level you know where you are at in the Paddle Canada system. You have the prerequisite of the Level 2 skills course and are ready to come out in more dynamic water packing all your own food and gear. You are ready for peer-to-peer paddling with opportunities to discuss and handle numerous scenarios that could be encountered while tripping in rough waters. For this five-day course, we will be heading out on trip and camping overnight.

Paddle Canada Level Four Skills

We are the only kayaking school in Ontario that has highly enough trained instructors to teach Level four skills courses. This level is an open coastal touring award. Take to the East or West coast of Canada and join our senior instructor team to learn to paddle in very dynamic conditions, in tide races, surf and enjoy the beauty of our countries ocean coastlines.
